He had been arrested on a complaint filed by his daughter's alleged rapists after being allegedly beaten up by their men last week. On Sunday, he was taken to a hospital in UP's Unnao where he died.

"He was under acute pain and vomiting perhaps due to internal injuries and haemorrhaging," said Dr Atul Kumar.

Five policemen have been suspended for poor handling of the complaint filed by the woman's father and four persons arrested for beating him.

The woman has alleged she was raped by Bangarmau (Unnao) MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brother last year.

CM Yogi Adityanath summoned Sengar and sought an explanation, sources said.

Adityanath ordered a judicial inquiry and said, "Those at fault, whoever they might be, will not be spared," he said.

The woman and her family attempted self-immolation on Sunday after police allegedly did not take any action. The family also said it was being pressured to withdraw the case.

"When my husband refused to withdraw the case, the MLA's brother and three others thrashed him mercilessly on April 3. Police did not book them. They arrested my injured husband and lodged him in jail. My husband has been murdered by the MLA and his men," the deceased's wife said.

"The entire village saw how badly my father was beaten. He was tortured and denied medical help. For the past eight days, we have been running around to save him but today we got his body," said the alleged rape survivor. Sengar denied the allegations.

This incident made cutting across party line condemn in social media . However top BJP leadership still maintain stoic silence.
