Two-time Sahitya Akademi award winner Kavingar Puviarasu says cotton mills have been Coimbatore’s hallmark. There were around 110 mills and a large numbers of factories producing equipment for these mills.

When Coimbatore is also an industrial and educational hub, considering Isha Foundation as the city’s identity is condemnable and there are several such organisations in the district, he adds.

Coimbatore is known as the `Manchester of South India’ and also for its Siruvani water. Yet Southern Railways has the Isha Yoga picture, misrepresenting Coimbatore, according to N Panneerselvam, president of Samooga Neethi Katchi.

He also voiced his protest against the railways having the picture of a private organisation to portray Coimbatore’s identity and that too when the entity was under scanner and accused in court of land encroachment and deforestation.

His party has threatened to stage a protest and deface the pictures if they are not removed immediately, he added.

A railway official admitted that there was a `mistake’ and the matter was being looked into. He also promised taking proper steps based on this.Promotion of individuals or private organisations by the government was not right, he said, adding that details had been forwarded to the officials concerned the engineering department and there would be corrective measures soon.
