From the arrest of the student’s union president and other activists on “sedition” charges last year to an 83% seat cut in MPhil/PhD admissions this year, which dislocated the academic life of hundreds of JNU students, to the recent bid to install a battle tank inside the campus , there has been a barrage of adventurist moves and proposals by the V-C to fundamentally alter the character of the university.
Among the winners were NSUI’s Rocky Tuseed who wrested the president’s post and Kunal Sehrawat who got the post of the vice-president. Congress leaders hailed the victory of the students’ union calling it a triumph of liberal values and wake up call for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Rocky Tuseed won the president’s post by a margin of 1,590 votes, while Kunal Sehrawat defeated the ABVP candidate by 175 votes. ABVP’s Mahamedha Nagar defeated NSUI’s Minakshi Meena by 2,624 votes to win the post of secretary while Uma Shankar defeated NSUI’s Avinash Yadav 342 votes.
